It's so much better than I expected and so much better than the first, which I really really enjoyed (mostly). I like the big background boss colossus things - fight them or not, it's up to me. I'm really not a fan of forced bosses - and in Metroid games they tend to be real brick walls for me. Powers get introduced at a fair rate of knots. Controlling the drone just gets better and better (and - I'm not finished, but starting to realise that this is part of the story).
